The concept of a global network of interconnected computers was first proposed in the 1960s by the United States Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The idea was to create a decentralized communication system that would allow information to be shared between different computers, even in the event of a nuclear attack.
The first version of the internet, known as ARPANET, was created in 1969. This early network connected four universities in the United States and allowed researchers to share data and resources. Over time, ARPANET grew in size and complexity, and in the 1980s, it was split into two networks: one for military use and one for academic use.
The modern internet as we know it today began to take shape in the 1990s with the development of the World Wide Web. British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). He developed the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the HyperText Markup Language (HTML), which allowed users to access and share information through a user-friendly interface.
The development of the web browser in the early 1990s further democratized the internet by making it accessible to non-technical users. This led to an explosion in the popularity of the internet, with millions of people logging on to browse, shop, and communicate with each other.
Today, the internet is an essential part of our daily lives. We use it to communicate with friends and family, stay informed about the news, conduct business, and access entertainment.
