Last year, I bought the Kugoo G-Booster scooter as a reasonable alternative in terms of price-performance ratio. It was, and still is, a very interesting product in the field of electric scooters. For the current price of around 27,000 CZK, you can get a very good range, speed, and performance. So if you’re also interested in this scooter, and you’re looking for a review of the Kugoo G-Booster, here are a few observations after riding it for just under 1000 km.
Review of Kugoo G-Booster
The overall build quality of the scooter is very good. Everything fits together nicely, there are no obvious creaks, and the entire structure seems quite sturdy. The scooter arrives partially disassembled in a package, but assembly only takes about 20 minutes. The first problem I encountered during assembly was with the brakes. They were not properly adjusted and the scooter either didn’t brake at all or the brakes were too tight and the wheel wouldn’t move. So, you should expect that the first brake adjustment will be up to you, right when you’re assembling the scooter. Personally, I couldn’t get the brakes adjusted perfectly even after two hours of trying.
The solution for me was to take the scooter to a repair shop where the brakes were properly adjusted. So, the problem wasn’t with the scooter itself, but with my own lack of experience with disc brakes. To my defense, I had never dealt with disc brakes on a bicycle before and I followed online tutorials. Although I managed to get the scooter to brake well, the disc would always make a clicking noise against the pad in a certain spot. Anyway, after assembling the scooter, getting the brakes adjusted cost me 300 CZK and I was able to start riding.
First breakdown after 350 km
To this day, I am not sure whether it was a manufacturing defect, which I eventually read about on the internet, or my own lack of knowledge about how to properly load the controllers in the scooter. However, after about 350 km, the scooter left me stranded on the road, unable to start. Only two errors were displayed on the screen, and it didn’t move an inch. So, it went to the warranty service for a month. The problem was in the controller of the rear wheel. Beware, this is a fairly common problem with these scooters.
After this experience, I would like to offer a small piece of advice, as I probably contributed to the death of the rear controller as well. The scooter has a drive system for both wheels, where you use a selector on the handlebars to determine whether the power is sent only to the rear wheel or to both. In order to achieve maximum range, I sent power only to the rear wheel for the vast majority of the time. I only turned on both wheels when going uphill. However, the controller couldn’t handle such a load and stopped working.
So, the first piece of advice for using the scooter is to ride on both wheels. By sending power to only one wheel, you will save practically no range. In the end, it doesn’t matter whether one wheel is running at 100%, or both at 50%.
The controller was replaced under warranty, and it kept on rolling. Actually, it still runs to this day, as no breakdown has occurred since then.
Performance of Kugoo G-Booster and Real Range
The scooter has a peak power of around 2400W, but this is not a constant power output. The continuous power output is 2 x 800W. Nonetheless, this power is more than enough for the scooter to handle any hill with me and my 80 kg weight on it. I have yet to encounter a hill that the scooter could not handle. It easily manages the biggest bumps with speeds of around 30 km/h and more. On flat terrain, I can practically reach the maximum speed of Kugoo G-Booster, which is 55 km/h. It could go faster, but the electronic limiter kicks in and prevents it from going further.
The range depends on many factors, with the main ones being speed and terrain. Therefore, I will provide a few examples of the range I have achieved with my weight of 80 kg and a backpack weighing about 10 kg.
- Flat and smooth terrain, medium speed of up to 30 km/h – range of 40 km
- Flat terrain and slow speed of 20 km/h – range of 55 km
- Hilly terrain and full power – range of 25 km
All of these real ranges were achieved with both wheels driven. As for monitoring the battery and the entire scooter, there are two displays on the handlebars. One displays only the battery voltage, but it is practically unreadable in sunlight. The other display is essentially a control unit that shows all indicators, including the battery, voltage, speed, speed level, current and total kilometers traveled, and many others.
Acceleration and Power
Acceleration and power on the Kugoo G-Booster are more than enough for me. However, since the scooter doesn’t come with a factory steering damper, the maximum speed of 55 km/h is already pushing the limit. The scooter tends to wobble at this speed, which can lead to the handlebars shaking and potentially cause a fall. Therefore, it is crucial not to underestimate the importance of wearing a helmet, preferably with a chin guard.
As for the brakes, they are decent but don’t expect anything exceptional. The scooter has disc brakes at the front and rear, but they are not hydraulic. They don’t brake poorly, but they also don’t brake aggressively. After some use, the brakes tend to make an unpleasant screeching sound. At least you don’t have to use the original bell. Everyone will hear you coming.
If you want to ride at maximum power and speed, I would highly recommend upgrading to hydraulic brakes. If you also add a steering damper, you will get a much more enjoyable and safer riding experience.
Scooter specifications:
- Power: 800 W front motor + 800 W rear motor (peak power up to 2400 W for both)
- Battery capacity: 23Ah
- Real tested range: 25-55 km
Conclusion of Kugoo G-Booster Review
To sum up all the important points, I am satisfied with the Kugoo G-Booster. If you don’t want to ride at extreme speeds and weigh less than 100 kg, this scooter offers a very brisk ride for a fairly long distance. Battery charging takes about 10 hours, so you will be limited by the battery’s performance for the whole day. The scooter is very suitable for city travel. If we ignore the 25 km/h speed limit imposed by law, you will not slow down anyone in normal traffic with the speed this scooter provides, not even cars. So, if you’re looking for a versatile scooter for both off-road and city use, this is a very good choice from the current offerings. The price is also very attractive. It’s not cheap, but it’s also not more than 50,000 CZK for commercially available scooters with the same specifications.
If you’re considering whether or not to get one, I hope this little review of the Kugoo G-Booster has at least helped you in some way. If you didn’t find what you were looking for, don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.
