If you actively manage web hosting that you have built on a content management system, you may reach a point where you need to make changes to the data stored on FTP. Such a situation may occur when you need to restore data from a backup, manually modify scripts, or deactivate plugins, among others. There are many possibilities when accessing FTP is required. There is a lot of software available on the internet that you can use for this purpose. You can, for example, use software from the Swiss developer, Total Commander. Connecting to FTP using Total Commander is simple and relatively fast.

How to connect to FTP using Total Commander
- In the toolbar, click on the URL icon.
- In the new connection window, uncheck the anonymous connection option and enter the server name or its IP address into the empty field.
- Then click OK.
- In the next step, you need to enter your FTP login details.
- The last field is for entering your password.
Where to obtain FTP information
You usually receive the server name or its IP address, login, and password from your web hosting provider. If you don’t have them, ask your provider to send them to you.
Directory structure
Once you log in to FTP, you will see the data structure of your website as the first thing. The structure may vary depending on your web hosting provider. Typically, you upload your website to the WWW folder or directly to the root folder on FTP. From there, you can work with data stored on the server, backup your website, delete or upload data, or modify the source code of scripts. However, before any action, I strongly recommend that you backup files and folders that you are going to modify.

I would like to emphasize that Total Commander is distributed as shareware, which means that you have it available for free for 30 days to try it out. After that, you need to purchase a license to continue using the software. Although you can use Total Commander for a longer period, after launching it, you must press a button with a number from one to three. It is therefore up to your discretion whether you purchase a license or not (related to the aspect of functionality, not morality)
