New and better WordPress 6.5 with codenamed Regina

This week, a new major update of WordPress was released, specifically version 6.5. It bears the codename Regina, as is customary with WordPress updates, named after a well-known musical artist. In this case, the artist is Regina Carter.

What does WordPress 6.5 bring us?

New Font Library

The new version of WordPress also introduces a new font library. You can now activate not only fonts from the Google library but also local fonts. This allows your website typography to take on much better dimensions, and everything will be much easier to manage.

You can manage the font library by opening the web editor (you can find it under Appearance -> Editor) and then navigating to the ‘Styles’ panel. Once there, select ‘Typography’ to see the fonts that are currently part of your WordPress theme.

New Revisions

The new WordPress also brings improved revision management. You will see a better overview of what has been done to the article, get quick summaries, and timestamps listing all revisions on the page.

Improved Background and Shadow Tools

WordPress has added additional ways for visual layout with updated design tools. You can control the size, repetition, and focus options on your background images to either blend them or make them stand out. You can also add shadow support to more blocks to bring visual depth to your design.

Enhanced Link Controls

Easily create and manage links with a more intuitive link creation experience, including a simpler user interface and a shortcut for copying links. Importantly, you can now immediately mark links with the nofollow tag.

Performance Update in WordPress 6.5

This version includes over 110 performance updates with impressive speed and efficiency improvements throughout the post editor and web editor. Loading is more than twice as fast as in version 6.4, with input processing speed up to five times faster than in the previous version.

Accessibility Improvements

WordPress 6.5 includes over 65 accessibility improvements across the platform, making it much more accessible. It includes an important fix that enables access to the submenu for screen reader users and others navigating via the keyboard. This version also adds fixes for admin color contrast, element positioning, cursor focus, and many more, all contributing to enhancing the WordPress experience.

If you haven’t already updated WordPress, I recommend doing so as soon as possible. However, as with everything, prioritize the security of your website and perform a complete backup of your site before updating. This means both FTP data and data stored in the MySQL database.
