Midjourney is an artificial intelligence capable of generating images based on textual descriptions, known as prompts. It’s a relatively new technology with the potential to revolutionize how we create and use visual content. Founded in 2022 by Midjourney AB, the company is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, established by Jonathan Söderberg, Johan Hanson, and David Olofsson. The Midjourney’s great development over the last two years has been fascinating. From its initial images that hinted at AI potential but were less usable, to today, where Midjourney generates absolutely stunning graphics and visual content.
Let’s delve into how much Midjourney has improved in generating visual content over the past two years.
How does Midjourney work?
Midjourney operates on the principle of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). GAN is a type of artificial intelligence comprising two networks that effectively compete. One network, called the generator, is tasked with creating new images. The other, the discriminator, aims to distinguish between generated images and real-world images.
Like any AI, Midjourney is trained on an extensive dataset containing images and text from various sources, including art, photographs, and nature. This diverse dataset enables Midjourney to generate images that are not only realistic but also creative.

Differences and Midjourney’s Great Development Across Versions
As you can see, for comparison, it’s been merely two years since the first image this artificial intelligence was able to generate in 2022. I intentionally use the word ‘merely’ because, as seen in the examples above, there has been an enormous leap in the quality of the content. With this pace of development in artificial intelligence, we can anticipate that by 2024, distinguishing between a genuine photograph and what Midjourney creates will be exceedingly challenging.
